Ergodicity breaking and lack of a typical waiting time in area-restricted search of avian predators

Movement tracks of wild animals frequently fit models of anomalous rather than simple diffusion, mostly reported as ergodic superdiffusive motion combining area-restricted search within a local patch and larger-scale commuting between patches, as highlighted by the L\'evy walk paradigm. Since L\'evy walks are scale invariant, superdiffusive motion is also expected within patches, yet investigation of such local movements has been precluded by the lack of accurate high-resolution data at this scale. Here, using rich high-resolution movement datasets (> ⁣7×107>\! 7 \times 10^7 localizations) from 70 individuals and continuous-time random walk modeling, we found subdiffusive behavior and ergodicity breaking in the localized movement of three species of avian predators. Small-scale, within-patch movement was qualitatively different, not inferrable and separated from large-scale inter-patch movement via a clear phase transition. Local search is characterized by long power-law-distributed waiting times with diverging mean, giving rise to ergodicity breaking in the form of considerable variability uniquely observed at this scale. This implies that wild animal movement is scale specific rather than scale free, with no typical waiting time at the local scale. Placing these findings in the context of the static-ambush to mobile-cruise foraging continuum, we verify predictions based on the hunting behavior of the study species and the constraints imposed by their prey.Comment: 27 pages, 8 figure

A Large-scale Dataset for Argument Quality Ranking: Construction and Analysis

Identifying the quality of free-text arguments has become an important task in the rapidly expanding field of computational argumentation. In this work, we explore the challenging task of argument quality ranking. To this end, we created a corpus of 30,497 arguments carefully annotated for point-wise quality, released as part of this work. To the best of our knowledge, this is the largest dataset annotated for point-wise argument quality, larger by a factor of five than previously released datasets. Moreover, we address the core issue of inducing a labeled score from crowd annotations by performing a comprehensive evaluation of different approaches to this problem. In addition, we analyze the quality dimensions that characterize this dataset. Finally, we present a neural method for argument quality ranking, which outperforms several baselines on our own dataset, as well as previous methods published for another dataset.Comment: Accepted to AAAI 202

PAI NOSSO REVOLUCIONÁRIO, PARCEIRO DOS POBRES, DEUS DOS OPRIMIDOS”: APORTES PARA UMA ANÁLISE SOCIOLÓGICA DA PASTORAL DA JUVENTUDE (PJ)

    Get PDF

A Proof-Based Annotation Platform of Textual Entailment

We introduce a new platform for annotating inferential phenomena in entailment data, buttressed by a formal semantic model and a proof-system that provide immediate verification of the coherency and completeness of the marked annotations. By integrating a web-based user interface, a formal lexicon, a lambda-calculus engine and an off-the-shelf theorem prover, the platform allows human annotators to mark linguistic phenomena in entailment data (pairs made up of a premise and a hypothesis) and to receive immediate feedback whether their annotations are substantiated: for positive entailment pairs, the system searches for a formal logical proof that the hypothesis follows from the premise; for negative pairs, the system verifies that a counter-model can be constructed. This novel approach facilitates the creation of textual entailment corpora with annotations that are sufficiently coherent and complete for recognizing the entailment relation or lack thereof. A corpus of several hundred annotated entailments is currently being compiled based on the platform and will be available for the research community in the foreseeable future

O EVANGELHO SEGUNDO A ESTAÇÃO PRIMEIRA DE MANGUEIRA: A REIVINDICAÇÃO ICONOGRÁFICA DE JESUS NUMA CRISTOLOGIA CARNAVALESCA

    Get PDF
